Where the competition is right now

The FA’s published calendar starts on 8 August 2026 with the extra preliminary round, followed by the preliminary round on 22 August and first round qualifying on 5 September. At this review on 15 September, the next scheduled stage is second round qualifying on 19 September. Individual ties and replays can be scheduled separately from the main round date.

Two results from those rounds give a fair picture of the football involved. SE Dons marked their first appearance in the competition by scoring six against Lancing in the extra preliminary round. AFC Greenwich Borough, also debutants, recovered from 3-1 down at Sittingbourne to win a first round qualifying tie. Both results came in qualifying, before the Premier League and EFL clubs enter the competition.

The qualifying competition involves 651 of the 743 entrants. All of them are competing for the 32 places available at the first round proper. The full calendar to Wembley

These are The FA’s 2026–27 round dates and prize-fund payments, checked on 15 September. The clubs column counts teams playing that round, rather than adding clubs still waiting to enter. Dates are the main round dates; confirm each fixture’s kick-off separately.

Prize money helps explain why a cup run can matter financially to a smaller club. It does not prove how a manager will select the team, and a larger later-round payment does not guarantee a full-strength lineup. Check the actual starting eleven and the surrounding fixture schedule.

Who enters when, and why the third round is the pivot

The entry system creates different kinds of tie as the season progresses. A qualifying-round match between non-league clubs needs a different assessment from a third-round tie involving a Premier League team. The table shows the main entry groups.

The third round brings 44 new teams into a field of 64: 20 Premier League clubs and 24 from the Championship join the 20 second-round winners. More than half of that round’s teams have not yet played a tie in this edition. That describes the draw’s structure; it does not by itself make an upset more likely.

January fixtures can leave a manager balancing the cup with league or European matches. Rotation is a possibility to check, rather than a rule for every favourite. Compare the confirmed starting eleven with the team you expected when you first looked at the price; odds may already have moved by then.

Holders, and what the record says

Manchester City are the holders after beating Chelsea 1–0 in the 2026 final, their eighth title and fourth consecutive final appearance. A fifth final is a possible outcome for 2027, not something the historical record can predict. Assess their current squad and draw alongside the price.

A bet on one tie and an outright tournament bet answer different questions. A team can have a realistic chance against a stronger opponent on one day while facing several further rounds to win the cup. Do not treat a memorable upset as evidence of a profitable outright strategy.

What qualifying-round football does to a price

Before the first round proper in November, the ties are in qualifying. Check these details for each fixture rather than assuming every non-league team or bookmaker has the same coverage.

• Player availability. Some squads include part-time players. Check each club’s own team news for absences instead of treating every non-league side as part-time.
• Published form is thin. A club several steps below the EFL may have played a handful of competitive matches this season, against opposition whose own level is hard to establish.
• Replays and extra time. A standard 90-minute market can settle as a draw even when the tie needs a replay or extra time. A to-qualify market concerns progression instead. Read the market’s settlement rule before combining those outcomes.
• Ground and pitch. Check the actual ground, surface, weather and any venue switch. Do not infer a goals advantage merely from the club’s place in the league system.
• Available markets. Some ties have few available markets or low limits. Compare the displayed odds and rules; there is no measured all-bookmaker margin comparison on this page.

If current team news or the settlement rule is unclear, passing on the fixture is a reasonable choice. A large competition provides more matches to research, not an obligation to bet on them.

Dates worth putting in a calendar

Four dates mark the main stages: 7 November 2026 for the first round proper, 9 January 2027 for the third round, 3 April for the quarter-finals and 22 May for the Wembley final. Qualifying takes place before November, and individual kick-offs and broadcasts need checking separately from these round dates.
